Rural Ministry Training: How Christian Leaders Institute Transforms Lives
Rural ministry is a calling that requires dedication, flexibility, and an ability to reach people in small communities where resources can be scarce. For many, traditional ministry training programs are simply not accessible due to location or cost. This is where the Christian Leaders Institute (CLI) steps in, offering free, high-quality training for individuals passionate about serving God in rural areas.
One such individual is Charlene Alfaro, whose inspiring journey showcases the profound impact of CLI on rural ministry training.
A Life Shaped by Faith and Family
Charlene Alfaro’s story begins in Massachusetts, where her grandmother first introduced her to Jesus. Through Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and church activities, her foundation in faith was firmly planted. As a child, Charlene even served as an Acolyte in her church congregation.
However, like many, she experienced a season of drifting from her faith during her teenage years. While she never turned her back on God, she wasn’t fully walking with Him either. That changed in 2018 when her beloved grandmother passed away. This loss became a turning point, drawing Charlene back to church and leading to her baptism.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought additional challenges, with church closures preventing in-person worship. During this time, Charlene discovered Granite United Church through a Facebook live stream. The messages and worship deeply moved her, leading to a profound encounter with the Holy Spirit. She began serving as a host in the church’s online community and joined a women’s Bible study group in 2023.
Finding Purpose in Chaplaincy
In early 2024, Charlene felt a calling to chaplaincy. A simple word she overheard on a police/fire scanner—”chaplain”—sparked a journey of discovery. After learning what a chaplain does, Charlene realized that her life experiences, faith, and passion for helping others had prepared her for this ministry role.
Her dream is to minister to first responders and those affected by disasters, offering spiritual support and helping them navigate trauma. This calling is deeply personal; both her father and stepfather served in emergency services, and Charlene witnessed the toll such roles took on their mental and emotional well-being. She feels honored to carry this mission forward, trusting the Holy Spirit to work through her to bring healing and hope.
Overcoming Challenges Through CLI
Living in rural Vermont, Charlene faced significant obstacles in pursuing ministry training. With a farm to care for and financial limitations, traditional seminary programs were out of reach. That’s when she discovered Christian Leaders Institute through a Google search, and everything changed.
CLI’s free, accessible, and high-quality courses have empowered Charlene to follow her calling without the need to travel or incur significant costs. She describes CLI as a “God-send,” not only for herself but for many others seeking ministry training in underserved areas.
Through CLI, Charlene is equipping herself with the tools and knowledge needed to minister effectively to first responders and rural communities. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the importance of making ministry training accessible to all, regardless of location or financial means.

The Need for Volunteer and Part-Time Ministers, Chaplains, and Christian Leaders in Rural Areas
Rural communities are the backbone of many nations, characterized by tight-knit relationships, strong values, and a reliance on faith to navigate life’s challenges. Despite their rich spiritual heritage, rural areas face a growing shortage of trained Christian leaders, chaplains, and ministers who can meet the unique needs of their communities. This shortage highlights the need for volunteer and part-time leaders to step in and serve where full-time ministers are unavailable.
Here, we explore the top five challenges rural areas face in securing effective Christian leadership and how Christian Leaders Institute (CLI) and the Christian Leaders Alliance (CLA) provide solutions.
Top Five Challenges in Rural Ministry Leadership
1. Decline in Full-Time Ministers
In rural areas, churches and ministries often operate with limited budgets, making it difficult to support full-time clergy. Many small congregations cannot afford to pay a full-time pastor or chaplain, leaving spiritual leadership roles unfilled.
2. Geographical Isolation
Rural areas often cover vast regions with scattered populations. This makes it hard for a single leader to serve everyone effectively. Churches, hospitals, fire departments, and other community institutions need local leaders who understand the culture and can step in quickly when needed.
3. High Demand for Chaplaincy Services
First responders, hospitals, and schools in rural areas increasingly seek chaplains to provide emotional and spiritual support. However, there are few trained chaplains in rural settings, leaving these critical roles unfilled or underserved.
4. Lack of Accessible Training Programs
Traditional seminaries and credentialing programs are often located in urban centers, far from rural communities. For aspiring leaders in rural areas, attending such programs can be financially and logistically impossible. This lack of access to training creates a gap in leadership development.
5. Balancing Ministry with Other Responsibilities
Many rural leaders need to work full-time jobs to support their families, leaving little room for ministry commitments. As a result, rural areas need leaders who can serve part-time or as volunteers while balancing other responsibilities.
Why Volunteer and Part-Time Leaders are Essential
Volunteer and part-time ministers and chaplains can bridge these gaps by providing spiritual care tailored to the needs of rural communities. These leaders are often members of the community who understand its unique challenges and can serve as trusted voices of guidance and hope.
Rural areas thrive when equipped with chaplains who can support first responders, ministers who can preach on Sundays, and Christian leaders who can offer pastoral care, lead Bible studies, and officiate weddings. However, these leaders need training and credentialing to fulfill their roles effectively.

Charlene Full Testimony
My name is Charlene Alfaro. I’m originally from Massachusetts, but I moved to Vermont in January 2024. I love animals and currently have a dog, a dove, guinea fowl, and many chickens. In my spare time, I enjoy painting, doing arts and crafts, and reading books. I’ve been a small business owner since 2020.
From a young age, my grandmother brought me to church and introduced me to Jesus. She made sure I went to Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and participated in church activities. In elementary school, I was chosen to be an Acolyte for our church congregation. During my preteen and teenage years, I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and strayed off the narrow path. I never gave up on God altogether, but I also wasn’t obeying Him or working on our relationship. That changed in 2018 when my grandmother went to be with the Lord. I started going back to church and was baptized shortly afterward.
During the pandemic in 2020, churches in my area weren’t allowed to gather. My cousin sent me a live stream of Granite United Church on Facebook to watch. The message and worship in this church truly touched my heart, and I would be in tears while listening. This is when the Holy Spirit entered my heart, soul, and mind, and when I truly came to know Jesus. I started serving as a host in the Granite United live stream chat and attending a weekly Bible study and women’s small group in 2023.
When I look back on my life, I know the Lord has been with me through all of my joys and trials. In my 20s and 30s, I experienced the deaths of many loved ones: my grandmother, father, stepfather, grandfather, uncle, and multiple friends, to name a few. The strength of the Lord and His peace that passes all understanding is the only way I made it through the grief.
In 2021 and 2022, I traveled across the country from Massachusetts to Nevada and back. During these travels, I felt the Lord’s presence so strongly and intensely. One particular moment that stands out was during a flash flood in Kentucky. There was water everywhere, and I saw vehicles that seemed to be floating and trapped. I cried out to God, feeling scared and unsure of what would happen to my family and me. After praying, I looked up and saw a semi-truck in front of us pushing the water out of the way. On the back of the trailer, in big, bold, red letters, it said, “Isaiah 43:2.” Instances like this are proof to me that we are deeply loved and protected by our Father.
I felt called to chaplaincy early in 2024. I heard the word “chaplain” on a police/fire scanner, and that single word stuck in my mind and soul. After about a week, I decided to Google the word “chaplain” because I had no idea what it meant. Once I learned about it, my whole life and everything I had experienced made complete sense, and I felt peace. When I graduated high school, I went to community college for a short time to study human services and psychology, but I felt something was missing. Now I know that key element was spirituality, faith, God. Our King of kings had a plan all along, still does, and always will.
My spiritual dream is to minister as a chaplain to first responders and others affected by disasters, to relieve their trauma through the Holy Spirit working in and through me to touch and heal their souls. My father was an EMT, volunteer firefighter, and Army medic. My stepfather was a firefighter, police officer, and Army Ranger. I heard about the trauma they went through and saw the pain and suffering in their eyes when certain issues came to mind. As much as it hurt me to see and feel their pain, I felt honored that they trusted me to talk about these issues. I want to help prevent other men and women from experiencing the emotional and spiritual trauma my family members endured, to help them deal with these issues in a healthy way, and to be present, so to speak, on the battleground if something potentially traumatic happens.
I thank God that I came across Christian Leaders Institute in a Google search after speaking to my Bible study leader about chaplaincy training. I live in a rural area and wouldn’t be able to travel far for high-quality ministry training because of my farm animals. I also wouldn’t be able to afford the training if it wasn’t for CLI. This organization is truly a God-send for many people!
