A Call To A Women’s Prison Ministry

My name is Toni Flores. I was born and raised in Texas. I spent 10 years in Colorado before recently relocating to South Carolina, where I now live. I have four children, with the youngest being twins. I recall my mother reading the Bible to me when I was a child and watching her pray. Although she grew up Catholic, she didn’t start taking me to church until I was 8. I received my first Bible at nine and was baptized Catholic when I was ten. My mother and I attended church regularly. During this period, I cultivated a prayerful life and deepened my relationship with God.

Childhood Tragedy

During my teenage years, my home environment was lax. My parents placed few restrictions on my behavior. One fateful Friday night, my childhood best friend and I were out late with friends. She had a curfew of midnight. Racing against time, our friend, who was driving, engaged in a speed contest with another vehicle. She lost control, and we crashed into a tree at 90 mph. The impact was severe, killing my best friend instantly. I was ejected from the car and suffered significant injuries.

Doctors at the hospital were uncertain of my chances of survival. Despite the dire prognosis, I defied the odds. Today, although I can’t run, I walk. Despite the loss of some fingers, I can still tie my shoes and write with my right hand. I have four wonderful children, including a set of twins. When I was in the hospital, staff labeled me the “miracle child.” Whenever medical professionals see my X-rays, they’re astounded at my mobility. To their disbelief, I simply respond, “God.”

I believe that evil forces wanted to use the accident to prevent me from fulfilling my divine purpose. While I was angry with God for a long time after the accident, my faith never wavered.

A Call to a Prison Ministry

After the accident, I faced additional trauma at home. I experienced emotional neglect from my mother and verbal abuse from my stepfather. This, combined with the accident’s aftermath and the loss of my best friend, significantly affected my mental health. I grappled with severe depression, anxiety, and anger. As an adult, my mental health struggles culminated in a violent altercation with my ex-husband, leading to my arrest.

During my incarceration, I was deeply affected by interactions with other inmates and prison staff. I connected with a pastor who visited the facility, and her spiritual guidance deeply influenced me. Through prayer and fasting, I found strength and clarity. After my release, my desire to serve in prison ministry grew stronger.

The Call

For years, I believed that I needed a formal education to fulfill my calling. However, despite accumulating student debt, I never obtained a counseling degree. In time, I realized that I didn’t need worldly credentials for God’s work. God rekindled the passion for prison ministry within me, revealing its name and logo during a prayer meeting.

Christian Leaders Institute and Me

During an online search on becoming an ordained minister, I discovered the Christian Leaders Institute (CLI). Unlike other institutions offering mere certificates, CLI provided comprehensive training at no cost. Through my studies at CLI, it became clear that God was guiding me to serve as a chaplain in a women’s prison in South Carolina. I trust that He will pave the way.

My incarceration gave me a unique perspective. I interacted with many women, learning their stories and understanding their actions. They highlighted the importance of unconditional love and empathy. It reinforced my belief that circumstances and upbringing significantly influence life choices.

In closing, my experiences have fortified my relationship with God. I’m eager to continue my spiritual journey with CLI and am fully committed to serving Him through prison ministry.
