Kingdom Ministers launched early Christianity.

In every society and culture throughout history, leaders, connectors, and patrons have the vision to build a better place. Christianity has a rich tradition of those leaders. In the early church, Roman or Jewish patrons often converted to Christianity. God used these men and women to spread Christianity!

Kingdom Ministers in the Bible

Sometimes these leaders were couples like Aquila and Priscilla, who supported Christianity by their means and accompanied Paul on mission trips. They also started churches.

Sometimes these leaders were women like Phoebe, a patron in Cenchrea, who also carried the letter to the Romans. In Romans 16:1-2, Paul introduces her as both a “minister or servant” or “deacon” (Greek diakonos) and as a big helper or patron of many (Greek prostatis).

There is, in fact, one book of the Bible written to one of these types of Christian leaders, the Book of Philemon.

Philemon was a patron and benefactor as a wealthy Christian. This Roman Patron was bi-vocational and served with his wife Apphia and son Archippus as ministers and hosts of a house church that met in their home (Philemon 1–2) in Colossae.

To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home:

Paul had led Philemon to the Lord on one of his visits to Asia Minor. He had stayed in Philemon’s home when in that region.

Philemon was also ordained as a Bishop or Episcopate because he not only ministered in a local church but also was influential in the spread of Christianity. He was disciplined by the Apostle Paul on how to lead as a Kingdom Minister.  Many Biblical scholars believe that the Apostle Paul met him on his second missionary journey in Ephesus.

Patrons as Kingdom Ministers

Communities and societies are indebted to their patrons! In the world of Christianity, these are the Kingdom Ministers.

Kingdom Christians are Needed!

Jesus talked a lot about building the kingdom. Jesus talked about the kingdom as the realm of God that intersects with the realm of humans. A place that invites God into our lives in a right relationship with God in what we do and say.

Matthew 6:33  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

A kingdom Christian operates with this worldview. A kingdom minister leads his/her enterprise to glorify God. The Apostle Paul taught Philemon to run his business that way, including freeing Onesimus, his slave who ran away.

Philemon 15-16  Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good— no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.

Most Biblical scholars believe that Onesimus was freed. That is the big reason the book of Philemon was included in the Bible. In fact, many see the distinct kingdom mindset concerning slavery that Paul is modeling to Philemon. As in, “Philemon, I respect your rights in our Roman society to have slaves, but he is an image-bearer of God, a brother! In Christ, there is no slave or free!”

Today kingdom Christians continue to make choices that seek the realm of God to intersect with the realm of humanity! This Kingdom Ministers program will advance the impact of Christians called into ministry in their circles of influence. This way of thinking was present in the early church and will help you make a big impact today! The Kingdom of God is being built everywhere, and Kingdom Ministers get to be part of that!
