Finding Hope Through COVID-19 Hysteria

How is it possible that the COVID 19 hysteria has impacted the world in such a dramatic way?

  • Global stock markets have crashed.
  • Oil prices have declined.
  • Events were canceled.
  • Air travel has been crippled.
  • Sports seasons cancelled.
  • Some companies have asked all their employees to work at home for a month.

How is it possible that a new common cold virus could shut down the world? What is everyone afraid of? This may be morbid to think about. People have always died from different causes and the world goes on anyway. The angel of death shows up for many differently caused deaths. We usually do not go out of our way to cancel trips or vacations. We have come to accept many causes of death. Such as:

  • Old age
  • Cancer
  • Flu
  • Accidents
  • Addictions
  • Murder
  • Heart Disease
  • Drowning
  • Much more

The Science Focus Magazine reduces the causes of death to four basic causes.  wrote:

In the 18th century, death certificates signed by the clergy listed as many as 41 different causes of death, including ‘suffocated by wet nurse or mother’. However if you ignore the circumstances leading up to the death and simply consider the proximal mechanism itself, there are basically four different ways to cause total and irreversible loss of brain stem function: oxygen starvation, high temperature, chemical toxin and physical damage. It seems that COVID-19 is having a different effect on us than the usually stated causes of death.

The hysteria about the COVID-19 continues.

The Washington Times published a story that questioned how the mainstream news media has created a false crisis.

Why is COVID-19 so troubling?

With all the hubbub and conversation, this crisis reminds us that death is not just a part of life! Death stinks! And we don’t want to die from one thing! So we are wasting trillions of dollars to avoid the unavoidable.

Christianity claims that death is a real enemy. The fear of death is a real fear.

The Bible teaches that Jesus came to release humans from the fear of death.

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—  and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

The Bible teaches that death is terrible and not the way things should be. The good news shared in the Bible is that Jesus defeated death and the fear of death. Christians celebrate Easter as the day that death was defeated. Not only did Jesus rise from the dead, but He also shares that victory with his followers who put their faith in Him.

We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 1Thessalonians 4:14

I respect that another way to meet the angel of death has come on the scene. I will listen to the CDC recommendations. The COVID-19 hype reminds me that my only hope is Jesus Christ, who has defeated death and the fear of death.

The hysteria may soon settle down as people put the COVID-19 on the acceptable causes of death. Some people will return to denying the despair of death again or blame someone for it.

We need to stop looking at the causes of death and our denial of it. Maybe we need to look for the reasons for hope. The greatest cause of hope for me is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
