A Firm Foundation Is Key to A Walk with God
My name is Matthew Wisegarver, and I am taking Ministry Basic Training at the Christian Leaders Institute (Learn more about online Bible classes, Click Here). Originally from South Korea, I now live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I was an orphan in Korea along with my sister in the ’70s. God placed us in an American family in Minnesota when we were very young. Jesus came into my life early when I was 12 years old, and I asked Him to be Lord and Savior.
Running from God
Sometime after that, incidents happened to me at my school and my church. The incidents caused me to question my faith, the existence of God, and why His people were so cruel. I was unable to deal with those incidents because my walk with God was weak. I had not formed good everyday habits like reading His Word, praying to Him, and worshiping Him. I also did not understand the concepts of Gods’ Grace, His Love, and the forgiveness of others as He forgave us. To sum it up in a nutshell, my foundation was fragile and built on sand.
I ended up walking away from Him soon after. I entered the military for the next 18 years after I graduated from high school. During my military stint, I kept running from Jesus. The louder He called out to me, the faster and further I ran. I ended up traveling the world, never staying in one place for too long. Eventually, my lifestyle caught up with me, and I was injured in service. After multiple surgeries, I was medically discharged. I ended up coming back home to Minnesota to recover and start my life over.
God Answers Prayers
I entered college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Technology. While I was doing so, I started experiencing the same incidents that I experienced as a child. So, I made plans to run again and relocate somewhere else after I graduated. However, God had other plans for me. My parents started praying for me in earnest, and God answered those prayers.
I was working for the State of Minnesota as an IT Security Analyst, but I planned to move back overseas to Japan. Then COVID 19 happened, and everything was locked down in terms of international travel. Then the George Floyd Incident expanded my role at my place of employment, so I was too busy working instead of planning to run.
During all the chaos, I finally caved in to my parent’s requests to attend their church. The pastor’s message was about addressing the type of incidents that happened to me during my childhood and condemning them. The pastor also made a case for forgiving the people causing those incidents as God has forgiven us for our sins. Then the Holy Spirit touched my heart. I recommitted my life to Christ. God’s grace and love pulled me back to Him.
Ministry Basic Training at CLI
This time, the Holy Spirit has been teaching me what my initial failure was and that I need to firm my foundation and relationship with God. So, this is what brings me to the Christian Leaders Institute (CLI).
I have a calling from God to local ministry and eventually to missions. Currently, I am in “basic training” again. I am at CLI to learn God’s fundamentals and His Word to expand His Kingdom effectively by reaching lost souls. My current job prevents me from attending traditional Bible Theology courses during the day. The self-paced nature of CLI helps me fulfill what God has called me to do. I thank God for the opportunity Christian Leaders Institute provides! The first class in Ministry Basic training helped firm my foundation.
I look forward to the other classes that CLI offers!
