Jesus Models Leadership

We celebrate many things about Jesus in the Church today. We celebrate His birth. We celebrate His death and resurrection. But, oddly enough, we rarely celebrate His life.

What did Jesus do during His life? He performed miracles, taught in the synagogues, challenged traditional interpretations of the law and the prophets, and ate and drank with sinners and tax collectors. While He was doing all of this, though, He was continually doing one other thing: leading.

Jesus had 12 disciples, or apostles, and He spent the majority of His ministry here on earth training them to be leaders in His kingdom. Where did He train them? Did He take them to a prestigious school where they could learn the truths of God and His word away from the world? Did He spend the three years drilling the law and the prophets into them, and regularly testing their knowledge?

Jesus didn’t do any of that. In fact, He chose His disciples from those who are described as “unschooled.” They were average Jews, not super righteous nor super educated. After He called them, He taught them through a model that we rarely see in today’s world: mentorship. This is what we base our training model on in Christian Leaders Institute.

Who Was Jesus?

Jesus’ story dates all the way back to creation. John tells us that, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…” Jesus was with God during creation. He saw Adam and Eve when they were created, and when they fell.

But Jesus wasn’t just someone who was there in the beginning with God, He was also someone who loved the world. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus, the son of God, was born in to the human world. But he wasn’t born into the world as a conqueror, or to rule His subjects on earth. Jesus didn’t come as the children of the gods in Greek myth. In fact, He didn’t break “a bruised reed” or conquer or subdue any nations. He came to be a “Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.” He showed us how much He loved us by following God’s plan all the way to the cross. The cross, and the resurrection that followed, are what makes Christianity what it is today.

In the past few months I have had a half a dozen people tell me I should minister and become a pastor. Outside of my calling from others, I have had over 4 or 5 different situations that, not directly spoken to me, but lead me to speaking the word. This is why I am here, to learn more about Jesus. Find out more of what it means to walk in Christ. Also, to help people to see, feel, and understand the love of Christ, the  grace of god and the power of the Holy Spirit. God forgives, Jesus saves, the Holy Spirit delivers. And above all else, I am here because I feel god resonating in me, I feel it is his will I am here, at Christian Leaders Institute, if I lose that feeling of the spirit directing me this way, I will step away from learning more about ministering, until then, God’s will be done.

I ask for prayer from others, that God continue to speak to me, and make his will for me clear, so I may honor him and give him more truly the only thing he wants from me, which is the life he so lovingly gave me.

Get to Know Jesus Better Through Ministry Training

We believe that training for the ministry works best when you do it the way Jesus did. Jesus took His disciples and taught them by teaching others. Sometimes, when they didn’t quite get it, He would have moments with them where He would explain it further. Most of the time, He let them watch, and once they were ready He even sent them out by themselves through the towns of Israel.

Of course, none of us are Jesus. There’s nobody on this earth who can remember all the Bible and the history of the church and teach all the best practical application of preaching and teaching the word of God. That’s why Christian Leaders Institute beams online training into the mentor relationships. The training provides all the informational material they need, and the mentor relationship provides the essential ministry training partnership they need.
